Turn a Pumpkin into a Jack-o-Lantern as a Halloween Party Activity

The pumpkin is the most visible and popular symbol of the fall season and Halloween. Everywhere you look pumpkins are popping up in grocery stores, at pumpkin festivals, and decorating porches and doorsteps. They come in many sizes, shapes and varieties. Turn the popular pumpkin into a Jack-o-lantern as a child’s Halloween party activity.

You may want to share with the kids the story of how the Jack-o-lantern came to be. It is an Irish folktale from the mid-nineteenth century about a man named Jack who was constantly playing games with the devil and outwitting him. When Jack died, Heaven wouldn’t take him because he’d spent so much time with the Devil. The Devil wouldn’t take him either because he was fed up with Jack. So Jack was forced to wander the earth for eternity as a spirit, lighting the way with an ever-burning coal he’d stolen from the Devil and stuck inside a carved turnip.

The legend inspired the Irish to carve scary faces in turnips at Halloween time, and place a lit candle inside to ward off the evil spirits. In honor of Jack, they named the turnip creation, Jack-o-lantern. When the Irish came to America, they found the pumpkin made an even better Jack-o-lantern than the turnip!

After sharing this folktale with the kids, have them carve their own Jack-o-lanterns. Select a variety of pumpkins in different shapes and sizes. It’s a good idea to have plain paper and pencils available to the kids can practice drawing what type of scary face they want to make. To ensure the child’s safety when carving, use special pumpkin carving tools now available at most Halloween supply stores.

Once the child copies the face onto their pumpkin, cut the top (or bottom) open so you can remove the seeds. Save the seeds to roast as a party snack. Scoop out the fibers with a large metal spoon or scoop. Now they can work on carving their pumpkins into Jack-o-lanterns. Have some votive candles or mini-flashlights available to they can light their Jack-o-lanterns.

For a variation of the traditional carved Jack-o-lantern, try painting on scary or funny faces with craft paint or cut facial features out of craft foam and glue onto the pumpkin. Another idea is to sculpt a face using other vegetables such as radishes, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, etc. Secure the vegetables in place by using toothpicks or bamboo skewers.

Seeing as there is a new build of Legions coming out soon, I thought it might be time to capture some of my favourite caps from the old build. Therefore this video is not composed of caps chosen for pragmatic value or efficiency, as after a year plus of playing efficiency no longer interests me overmuch. Instead these caps have been chosen because they both interest and challenge me. Some are certainly more challenging than others, the nivosus route especially. The music is Pendulum – Propane Nightmares. As ever, enjoy. Zhou.

Cooking While Camping

While we were kids, my brother and I, had the opportunity of traveling around the countryside with our father and explore everything our home country had to offer to the three musketeers, which was our code name. Unfortunately, in most of these trips our mother was left behind as she had to work and we were given the chance to spend time with our father who as a nature lover took as almost anywhere our car and feet could lead us. These trips were our time together with our beloved father, who while we were young did everything in his power to spend as much time with us as possible. If time was not the issue back then, we tried to keep the budget under logical limits, so all these trips were made with our car that was carrying on its roof our specially designed and hand-made (by my father) tend.

During those camping times and since our mother was not near by to feed us, our father was apart from the designated driver and the leader of our group, also the cook that served us some of the best meals we have ever tasted; probably because we were really hungry by the time we eat. The truth is that I still remember the taste of his pasta and if I could go back in time, I would love to experience again the thrill of singing with my brother while our dad was smiling cooking his amazing pasta on our carry on kitchen supplies.

Other campers tend to agree with my remark as they support that camping cooking can be some of the best cooking there is. Close to the environment and while being able to smell all that wonderful tasty food coming out of the fire, many agree that there is nothing better. If you are a beginner in camping, you should know that there are several different methods that can be used when cooking while camping, like wood fires, camp charcoal, stoves, foil cooking and more. The type of cooking method is directly related to the food you will decide to make and how you like it cooked sometimes decides what method you should be using. But then again there are several camping cooking tips to consider before cooking and camping out.

Consider freezing the meat for instance. Freezing it ahead of time can keep the meat fresh and other foods cool as well. My father used to be proactive like that and plan ahead of time. He also used plastic bags or containers to keep measured portions of the food that was about to consumed, safely contained. I think it is also best if you want to avoid food from sticking to the pans to apply oil on the grill. Finally, put matches somewhere safe to keep them dry as many camping cookbook recipes require the use of natural fire and there is no better way to start a fire than with matches. You can also keep your drinks in a separate cooler from food as it can helps keep foods colder longer avoiding any kind of spoilage. Finally, a great tip is to keep water bottles when they are empty because they can become great camping cooking containers to put the salad dressing, oils, or any other liquid substance.

How to Prepare For Disasters

You never know what can happen in the world today. Global warming has made natural disasters much more frequent and powerful. Wars are happening everywhere. Virus outbreaks are getting more frequent and dangerous as well. When it happens, there is nothing we can do to stop it but we can make sure that we prepare ourselves for it. Following the steps below will help you increase your chances of survival.

1. Plan for an Emergency

Planning is critical if you want to survive a disaster. Plan for anything that can happen to you in any situation. It’s important that you know where everything is and to keep them in the same place where it is accessible. Having a small survival kit in your car is a good idea in case something happens on the road. If possible, everyone involved should know what the plan is.

2. Build a Complete First Aid Kit

I have yet to find a ready made medical kit that caters for everything but it’s a good place to start your collection. Try the professional version of the emergency kit. It’s still not complete but it’s a very good place to start with.

Be sure you have enough to cater for everyone. There is no such things are having too much medical supply. In natural disasters or other emergencies, a lack of supply is much more common. Always buy extra bandages and antiseptic wipes for better protection.

3. First Aid Training

All that time and money to build an emergency kit won’t do any good if you don’t know how to use them. Courses like CPR, First Aid and AED are offered by the Red Cross but that’s not all. Always improve your knowledge, learn about injury prevention, blood borne pathogens and community disaster. Knowing these skills can be lifesaving.

4. Store Emergency Water

There might be a water shortage during an emergency so better stock up. Store them in containers that are not easily punctured and replace old water with fresh water every three months. Fill up all your containers if you think that a disaster is coming soon.

Remember to have a stock of water purification tablets but be aware that they’re only safe when used for short periods of time and with the correct dosage.

5. Save Up Some Food

You should have a variety of food stored in case of an emergency and remember that you might not always be able to heat up your food. If you’ve built your emergency kit well, you’ll be able to warm up your food on a wood fire.

6. Cooking

Access to a stove may prove difficult in a emergency situation. In this case, propane stoves are a perfect companion. Having hot food to eat keeps your body nourished and helps you deal with the cold better.

7. Replacement Lights

In tornadoes and hurricanes, losing power is a very likely situation. That’s why you need emergency lighting. If you’re using an electric lantern, be sure to stock up on batteries. Light sticks are excellent because they can last very long. They’re fairly cheap and you can get them in varying lengths of hours and different colors. Stock up several of them.

8. Emergency Tool Kit

In an emergency situation, you might need some tools for whatever tasks comes your way. You might need to dig of hole, cut wood, fix the camp stove or tons of other stuff. A multi-tool is always handy so make sure you have that.

9. Emergency Radio

To keep up-to-date with the news and weather reports in a natural disaster emergency you need a radio. It’s important that an emergency radio can still play even without power e.g. a wind-up radio.

10. Guides

There are a lot of useful tips you can get from survival guides. Check with other guides to see if the information has at least some truth in it. Pay particular on the part about foraging. There are many deaths as a result of eating poisonous food. Mushrooms, in particular, have been responsible for thousands of deaths through the years. Foraging and survival guides can help give you that extra edge.

Where your life is concerned, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. To be prepared may take some work but it’s the best way to make sure you and your family come out safe in an emergency.

Pressure Vessels Fabrication (1 of 2)

A pressure vessel is a closed, rigid container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure different from the ambient pressure. The end caps fitted to the cylindrical body are called heads. In addition to industrial compressed air receivers and domestic hot water storage tanks, other examples of pressure vessels are: diving cylinder, recompression chamber, distillation towers, autoclaves and many other vessels in mining or oil refineries and petrochemical plants, nuclear reactor vessel, habitat of a space ship, habitat of a submarine, pneumatic reservoir, hydraulic reservoir under pressure, rail vehicle airbrake reservoir, road vehicle airbrake reservoir and storage vessels for liquified gases such as ammonia, chlorine, propane, butane and LPG. In the industrial sector, pressure vessels are designed to operate safely at a specific pressure and temperature, technically referred to as the “Design Pressure” and “Design Temperature”. A vessel that is inadequately designed to handle a high pressure constitutes a very significant safety hazard. Because of that, the design and certification of pressure vessels is governed by design codes such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in North America, the Pressure Equipment Directive of the EU (PED), Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), CSA B51 in Canada, AS1210 in Australia and other international standards like Lloyd’s, Germanischer Lloyd, Det Norske Veritas, Stoomwezen etc.

Choosing a Camping Lantern

When you go camping you will need a camping lantern , camping stove and a camping cot as well as a flash light.

All campers will need some type of lantern gas, battery, or candle. Each one has there pros and cons. To find out which will work for you here are a few tips.

Gas lanterns

give off bright light but are noisy and will be the most expensive of all lanterns to operate. You will have to pack extra propane bottles The older liquid gas lanterns give off just as much light but you will have to refill the tank with liquid gas and this can be messy as well as dangerous if you are not careful. Both types of lanterns use mantels so be sure to carry extras.

Battery lanterns

give of plenty of light but however you will need to have spare batteries or if it is a rechargeable style you will need some way to recharge it. The rechargeable lanterns do not last as long as a battery type of lantern and the lighting tends to be a bit duller. The rechargeable lanterns can be recharged with you car by plugging into the cigarette lighter on some models.

Candles

will are the most cost effective but you have to be very careful not to start a fire with them. They also do not through a very strong light and they are subject to going out in a breeze.

The best lantern to use inside a tent is a battery style. But they do not work well in colder climates as the batteries tend to run down faster due to the cold..

Be sure the lantern you buy is weather proof. If you are camping in colder weather the gas type of lanterns would be your best choice because not only do they give of a bright light they also give off a fair amount of heat. Never use the gas lanterns in the tent. Should the lantern get knocked over or get too close to flammable materials it could start a fire.

If you are using a gas lantern in the rain you have to be careful because the glass globe can break if a lot of water gets on it. A single mantle in a lantern gives off about 300 watts of light. Be aware that the glass globe of all gas and propane lanterns get extremely hot and can give you a serious burn.

If you are going to use candles you will have to be very careful that you do not start a fire. Rememer that the hot wax of the candle can burn you if you get it on your skin. Never leave a candle that is burning in your tent unattended and never fall asleep with a burning candle or a burning lantern in your tent.

Many camping trips have been ruined by a hot lantern or a burning candle. Now matter which type of lantern you use always play safe Never store a hot gas lantern near any flammable materials or leave any open flames unattended.

Be sure the flashlight you purchase is waterproof, corrosion resistant and has a scratch resistant lens. Look for one that has an adjustable beam and can be free standing which frees up your hands to do other things.

Have a flashlight for each camper in your group. The plastic type are great for the kids and they only cost a dollar or so. Never let the kids wander around at night as unless they’ve been taught not to shine their flashlight beams into other camping sites which can upset the other campers.

Be sure that the flashlights are shock proof. Many a flashlight has been broke because the kids accedently dropped it on the ground. If you are walking at night never shine your flash light at any moving vehicles. Your light may blind the driver and which could cause an accident.
